A picturesque land tucked away between the borders of Belgium, France and Germany; a land which embraces different nationalities with equal tenderness; the country which is the second wealthiest in the world; Grand Duchy of Luxembourg has many decorative definitions. (#Luxembourg #Europe #travel)
Blessed with luxuriant forests and rolling hills, the history of Luxembourg dates back to the 10th century. After its independence in 1867, Luxembourg traveled through significant political and economic transformations. Though they declared neutrality during the World Wars 1 and 2, the country was conquered by Germany during both war periods and hence its history closely connects with that of Germany. Luxembourg eventually dropped the neutrality status and took a firm position in the race towards economic reformation and international cooperation. The founding of European Economic Community which later became the European Union, was a mile stone step in the history of the nation. Power transitions took place till a system of parliamentary government and monarchy existed together where the Duke appointed a Prime Minister and the country’s governing was held by the Prime Minister. Being a declared tax haven and having nourished plenty of multi-national conglomerates under her shelter, Luxembourg also passed through severe criticisms on ambiguous financial deals. With diligent and focussed approach, the nation recovered its status and established itself as financially transparent and now proudly reigns as the second wealthiest country in the world and Europe’s most powerful investment management centre.
For a tourist what would strike attractive is the amicable combination of old and modern spanning the length of the land. The older side of town of Dinant houses the 13th century cathedral and the Place D’ Armes (Armes Square) market which has been the same for past 1000 years while the modern side of Luxembourg has the European Court of Justice, European Investment Bank and several other EU administrative offices. The majestic sight of castles and churches in the country can undoubtedly be a treat along with green forests canopying the cities.
Luxembourg City, the capital of Luxembourg, offers myriad options to explore, with its tunnels, corners and appealing constructions. The heart of Luxembourg appears to be more golden than the place is. 45% of the population of the nation belongs to the neighboring countries of Portugal, France, Germany, Belgium and Italy. The national language is Luxembourgish and it shares with German and French, the status of being the administrative Languages. The existence of three languages itself is testimony to the emotion of integrity the nation holds. Diversity was accepted to such extent that the Government briefly considered voting status to be given to residents who belonged to other nationalities as well. Today, Luxembourg welcomes the world, whether he/she is a tourist, a student, an employee or a business owner and promises a healthy, friendly and safe place for each to visit or reside in.
