How diverse is Luxembourg.

Updated: May 11, 2018

As diverse as the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg

A harmonious togetherness; that’s the need of the hour and the pursuit of many. In a world where 195 countries exist with multitudinous ethnic and social backgrounds, religions and culture, it has become a dream to co-exist, to respect one another and to live a life that is worthy of living.

Social and cultural classifications are man-made. Skimming through pages of history would reveal that religion began as a way of life to instil an order in a confused society and to create a simple path for even the not so highly educated class to follow, in achieving a successful life. People embraced and renewed different faiths and faced their internal spiritual conflicts.

Boundaries of countries were drawn, erased and re-drawn; all as a result of a man-made institution of War. We have witnessed two major battles which split the world into two and consequentially were born a developed set of nations and developing nations. In the endeavor to sustain world peace after the World War II was over, an entity was founded, “United Nations”, and their work continues in preserving normalcy in political relations between nations and promoting human rights.

On introspection, work on socio-economic-cultural integration has thus been a constant process in the world and it would remain so in this ever changing global scenario. The growth of technology and commerce would have shrunk the world to mere distances to be traversed, but the question remains whether our mind-set has developed so far to accept the differences and diversity yet. Among the list of the countries which have learned to embrace the global diversity and multicultural outlook, proudly stands Luxembourg leading the bandwagon followed by Switzerland, Australia and USA.

The integration of various cultures might have begun from the intertwined history of Luxembourg with France and Germany. Today, more than 47% of the population are foreign residents from at least 150 plus countries and they interact with each other on a daily basis in various social platforms in the country. What’s more encouraging and inspiring is that it has been a peaceful environment prevailing in the nation for over many decades irrespective of the differences in the residing natives and foreigners.

The existence of Luxembourg is a model for many other countries that are moving through cultural strife. The government’s efforts to promote multiculturalism through a convention in 2005 and the establishment of “Forum of Cultures” in 2014 to emphasize and facilitate the integration of foreign artists/actors with Luxembourgers could be emulated in totality or partially by her contemporaries in the world and can also be extended to different fields or industries. A multilingual work atmosphere with French, German, Luxembourgish, Portuguese and English languages in Luxembourg benefits the immigrants who have come out of their own countries in the search of quality work opportunities and higher standard of living. Equal political and economic rights for women, not just on record but in practice also ensures that gender will never become an obstacle for the women willing to pursue a work life in Luxembourg. While enjoying the tag of being the second wealthiest country, Luxembourg also celebrates a safe environment for natives and foreigners alike.

Luxembourg’s beauty lies not just in her varying landscapes and picturesque sceneries, it is also in the subtle quality of the country’s acceptance of human life irrespective of nationality, cast, creed, culture or language.

Welcome to the “United Luxembourg”! United Luxembourg isn’t just a thought but a feeling which invigorates the heart of every human being living in this beautiful country and it’s now time the world takes notice!
